Joe Emerson

IMG_4012.jpeg

Co-Founder, Vice President, Treasurer

Joe was a Captain for a Major Airline with over 21 years of airline experience.  He was a high performer in his career working as a pilot representative, instructor pilot, proficiency check airman, subject matter expert in upset prevention and recovery training, manual project team member and a safety representative.  In a very public fashion he experienced the consequences of years of undiagnosed self medication.

He is taking responsibility for his actions and using his story to bring awareness to the disincentives aviation professionals face when considering accessing health care and navigating the complexities of the current aeromedical system.  Currently he is in recovery for substance use and actively participating in his ongoing health.

As Joe continues his journey he hopes that his story can be a catalyst to fund research that better defines aviation health care problems, potential solutions, increases public and industry awareness and drives motivation to improve Aerospace Medical Certification for the betterment of the individual pilot/controller, flying public, airlines, and the FAA.

Aaron is deeply committed to ensuring that pilots have access to essential medical care, having personally navigated the FAA's aeromedical certification process. Aaron is driven to support fellow pilots following the tragic loss of a close friend who was a major airline captain who died by suicide. He advocates for early intervention for pilots so that they can reach their potential both professionally and personally.

Stephanie Day

Board Member

Stephanie has a deep love for aviation! She has been a flight attendant for Horizon Air for 26 years. She is also a student pilot desiring to transition to the flightdeck. She knows the intricacies of the FAA medical certification process as she has been navigating through it for nearly a decade. Devastated after receiving her first FAA medical certificate denial letter she paused her flight training. Deciding to return to school, she recently completed a Bachelors in Aeronautical Science. Her capstone project delved into the Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) special issuance medical certification process for pilots, drawing from her personal challenges and advocating for pilots facing similar hurdles.

Stephanie serves as a peer support representative for her airline. She has also served on the safety committee. She is a huge advocate for peer support and knows how effective and important this service can be to support an individual’s wellbeing. Stephanie is passionate about bringing awareness and creating a healthier and safer aviation industry. She believes education and advocacy are important because we cannot shift until we become aware of what needs to be shifted. Her safety committee experience showed her that data and reports drive change. She promotes CSA’s mission to support the research needed to make changes to the current aeromedical system.

Kelsey Wagner

Project Director, Social Media Manager Board Member

Kelsey is a young pilot who devastatingly lost her medical the first semester of college to an unannounced heart condition. She achieved her private pilots license at the age of 17 and got into her dream school of University of North Dakota. Her first semester there her health declined and she prioritized her mental and physical health which led to losing her medical. With the loss of her medical and her dream school she got first hand experience of how important mental health is. The restrictions for pilots on mental and physical health can be detrimental and she is driven to find a way for pilots to be human and still have their medical. “Every pilot has a right to care because at the end of the day we are all human.”
